Meanwhile, The Guardian criticized The Weeknd’s performance as Tedros, a cult leader and nightclub owner.

Tesfaye’s performance was also mocked online, due to the way he was given a “carte blanche” speech.

‘The Idol’ was criticized for its controversial sex scenes :

While “The Idol” was initially conceived about female empowerment when director Amy Seimetz was involved with the project, the final product contained much more controversial scenes and jokes that were not well received.

The show starts with a shot of Jocelyn with cum dripping down her face in front of the audience, and it gets more raunchy from there, including a scene where Tedros strangles her during sex with her.

In March, a Rolling Stone report compared “The Idol” to “torture porn” shortly before its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where it received backlash.

Variety described it as a “disgusting male fantasy”, and Kyle Buchanan of The New York Times called it a “pornhub homepage odyssey” on X, formerly known as Twitter.
